It is March. The school bell rings at 8:30. Garam opens the classroom door. The room smells like new books and chalk.
A boy at the window is drawing in a small notebook. A new student is unpacking a bag with foreign stickers. A girl in the back is looking at a tablet.
Garam sits down. The teacher smiles. "Welcome, everyone. Today, we say hello in English."
Garam takes a breath. She stands up. She is the first one.
"Hi. I'm Garam. I like asking questions."
One sentence. The room goes a little brighter.

가람이 교실 사물함 뒤에서 발견한 낡은 노트. 거기에는 한 줄짜리 자기소개들이 적혀 있었습니다. 누가 썼을까요?
One Friday afternoon in March, Garam stayed in the classroom alone. The other students had already gone home. The room was very quiet. A late spring wind blew through the open window, and the curtains moved slowly. Garam was looking for her pencil case under the desks and chairs.
Behind the classroom door, in a small dusty corner, she found something strange — a small blue notebook. It had a tiny silver star drawn on the cover. The corners of the pages were soft and a little yellow. Garam picked it up carefully, as if it could break in her hands.
She opened the first page. The handwriting was small but very careful. The pencil lines were almost gone, but the words were still there. Garam read them slowly:
"Hi. I am a student of this room. I like the sound of rain on the window. I don't like loud bells. I want to be a writer someday. — Sujin, March 4, 1998."
Garam was surprised. The notebook was from twenty-seven years ago. Was Sujin a writer now? she wondered. She turned the page slowly. Another short text was waiting for her.
"My name is not important here. I am a quiet boy. I love numbers and the moon. I am ten years old this year. — September 11, 2003."
"Hello to the next reader. I'm sorry — the page is a little wet. I cried in this classroom yesterday, but I am okay now. I like my friends. I love art class. — Hyemi, May 16, 2010."
"I'm fast. I'm loud. I run faster than the bell. My teacher says I should sit still, but the sky outside the window is too big. — October, 2017."
Page by page, more self-introductions appeared. Different years. Different students. Different handwritings. The same classroom. Some pages were happy, some were sad, some were just one word: "hungry." Garam smiled at that one for a long time.
Without thinking, Garam pulled a pen from her bag, found an empty page, and wrote her first English sentence in a notebook that was older than her parents:
"Hi. I'm Garam. I ask 'why' about everything. I love my new friends — Min, Alex, and Sora. We met last Monday. — March, today."
That evening at the park, Garam showed the notebook to her three new friends. Their eyes opened wide. Min took the pen first and drew a small flower next to her words.
"I'm Min. I draw the world when words feel too small. I like quiet afternoons. — March, today."
Alex wrote next, slowly, with a careful hand. He still wrote some letters from right to left.
"My name is Alex. I am from a small town in Canada. The Korean sky is very wide. I miss snow, but I like kimchi. — March, today."
Sora typed the sentence on her tablet first, just to check the spelling, and then copied it onto the paper with a soft, careful hand.
"I'm Sora. I love stars and code. One day, I want to send a small robot to the moon. — March, today."
They closed the notebook together and put it gently back behind the door of Room 1-3. Maybe next year, another new student would find it. Maybe they would read about Garam, Min, Alex, and Sora. Maybe they would add a new line, too.
— "A classroom keeps small voices for a long time," Garam whispered, and turned out the light.
1단락 · 3월의 어느 금요일 오후, 가람은 교실에 혼자 남았다. 다른 학생들은 이미 집에 갔다. 교실은 매우 조용했다. 늦은 봄바람이 열린 창문 사이로 들어와 커튼이 천천히 움직였다. 가람은 책상과 의자 아래에서 필통을 찾고 있었다.
2단락 · 교실 문 뒤, 작고 먼지가 쌓인 구석에서 그녀는 이상한 것을 발견했다 — 작은 파란색 공책. 표지에는 작은 은빛 별이 하나 그려져 있었다. 페이지 모서리는 부드럽고 살짝 누렇게 변해 있었다. 가람은 마치 손에서 부서질 듯 조심스럽게 그것을 집어 들었다.
3단락 · 그녀는 첫 페이지를 펼쳤다. 글씨는 작지만 매우 정성스러웠다. 연필 자국은 거의 사라졌지만 글자는 아직도 거기 있었다. 가람은 천천히 읽어 내려갔다:
"안녕. 나는 이 교실의 학생이야. 나는 창문에 떨어지는 빗소리를 좋아해. 시끄러운 종소리는 싫어. 언젠가 작가가 되고 싶어. — 수진, 1998년 3월 4일."
중간 단락 · 가람은 놀랐다. 공책은 27년 전의 것이었다. 수진이는 지금 작가가 되었을까? 그녀는 궁금했다. 천천히 페이지를 넘겼다. 또 다른 짧은 글이 그녀를 기다리고 있었다.
"내 이름은 여기서 중요하지 않아. 나는 조용한 남자아이야. 나는 숫자와 달을 좋아해. 나는 올해 열 살이야. — 2003년 9월 11일."
"다음 독자에게 안녕. 페이지가 조금 젖어 있어 미안. 어제 이 교실에서 울었거든. 하지만 지금은 괜찮아. 친구들을 좋아해. 미술 시간을 정말 좋아해. — 혜미, 2010년 5월 16일."
"나는 빨라. 시끄러워. 종보다 빨리 달려. 선생님은 가만히 앉아 있으라고 하시지만, 창밖의 하늘이 너무 커. — 2017년 10월."
본격적 발견 단락 · 페이지를 넘길 때마다 더 많은 자기소개가 나타났다. 다른 해, 다른 학생들, 다른 글씨체. 같은 교실. 어떤 페이지는 행복했고, 어떤 페이지는 슬펐다. 어떤 페이지에는 한 단어만 적혀 있었다: "배고프다." 가람은 그 페이지를 보고 한참을 미소 지었다.
가람이 쓰는 단락 · 자기도 모르게 가람은 가방에서 펜을 꺼내 빈 페이지를 찾아, 부모님보다 오래된 공책에 자신의 첫 영어 문장을 적었다: "안녕. 나는 가람이야. 나는 모든 것에 '왜?'라고 묻는 걸 좋아해. 새 친구들 — 민, 알렉스, 소라를 정말 좋아해. 우리는 지난 월요일에 만났어. — 오늘, 3월."
네 친구 단락 · 그날 저녁 공원에서, 가람은 세 명의 새 친구에게 공책을 보여 주었다. 그들의 눈이 동그래졌다. 민이 먼저 펜을 잡고 가람의 글 옆에 작은 꽃을 그렸다. "나는 민이야. 말이 너무 작게 느껴질 때 나는 세상을 그려. 조용한 오후를 좋아해. — 오늘, 3월."
알렉스가 다음으로 천천히, 정성스러운 손길로 적었다. 그는 아직도 어떤 글자들은 오른쪽에서 왼쪽으로 썼다. "내 이름은 알렉스야. 캐나다의 작은 마을에서 왔어. 한국 하늘은 정말 넓어. 눈이 그립지만 김치를 좋아해. — 오늘, 3월."

마무리 단락 · 그들은 함께 공책을 덮고, 1학년 3반의 문 뒤에 살며시 다시 놓아 두었다. 어쩌면 내년에 또 다른 새로운 학생이 그것을 발견할 것이다. 어쩌면 그들은 가람, 민, 알렉스, 소라에 대해 읽게 될 것이다. 어쩌면 그들도 새로운 한 줄을 더하게 될 것이다.
