To buy time, she walked to the board and read the cards from earlier classes. They had never been taken down. Some were ten, even twenty years old, and the ink had turned a soft brown. "My name is Mina. I love the sea. I want to study far away." "I'm Junho. I love quiet mornings. My goal is to speak in front of the class without shaking."
One short card stopped her. In careful, slightly crooked letters, it read: "I am new here. I don't know anyone yet. My goal is to make this room feel like home." There was no name — only a tiny drawing of a paper boat.
Jiwoo realized that every card was a small promise — not to the teacher, but to the person each writer hoped to become. The board was not a decoration. It was a quiet record of hundreds of beginnings, all made in the same nervous handwriting she felt in her own hand right now.
She went back to her desk. This time the card did not feel empty; it felt like it was part of something much longer than one morning. She wrote: "I'm Jiwoo. I love building things that move. This year, I want to finish one project I'm proud of — and help someone who feels new."
When she pinned her card next to the paper boat, the boy who had written so quickly leaned over. "Robotics?" Leo asked, reading her card. "Same here." Sena and Haneul drifted closer to see the old cards too. In four minutes, four strangers were sharing the same small wall — and the room, just slightly, began to feel less new.
Years from now, another nervous student would stand here, read these lines, and add one more. That, Jiwoo thought, was the real point of the card. A beginning is not a blank page; it is a line you add to a story that started long before you.
